A story within a story. A book within a book. "The Story Keeper" by Kelly Rimmer was an engaging read from start to finish.
It follows Fiona, fresh off a painful divorce, as she returns to the town she grew up in and begins the process of moving into an old historic home. On her first day she finds a book "The Midnight Estate" and begins reading it. She soon realizes that the book has some kind of connection to the house and her own life.
I could not stop thinking about this book. It was very hard to put down, but alas... life! The characters were well-written and nuanced. I especially enjoyed the relationships of Fiona and her family as they were loving but complicated - as most familial relationships are. The story unraveled in such a way that the ending wasn't a surprise - you see it coming - but that doesn't even matter. By that time I was so invested I couldn't put it down and had to keep reading.
If you enjoy books about families and complex relationships with a lot of atmosphere then this is the book for you. This is a great book for fans of Matt Haig's "The Midnight Library". I rated this 4.25 stars and look forward to reading more books by this author.
